Tanya Chutkan Education: Tanya Chutkan, officially known as Tanya Sue Chutkan is a Jamaican-born American lawyer.

She’s also a jurist serving as a United States district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Columbia.

Chutkan holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University which she received in 1983.

Later, she attended the University of Pennsylvania Law School and was an associate editor of the University of Pennsylvania Law Review.

Chutkan graduated from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1987 with a Juris Doctor and subsequently began private practice.

From 1987 to 1990, she was in private practice at the law firm Hogan & Hartson, and from 1990 to 1991, she worked at the law firm of Donovan, Leisure, Rogovin, Huge & Schiller.

From 1991 to 2002, Chutkan was a trial attorney and supervisor at the Public Defender Service for the District of Columbia. In 2002, she joined the law firm of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, becoming a partner in 2007.

Chutkan has since been in active service as a lawyer and a jurist with some of her notable cases being; presiding over the Imran Awan and Hina Alvi fraud case in summer 2017.

On March 7, 2019, she ruled that U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos illegally delayed the implementation of the “Equity in IDEA” regulations.

In April 2019, Chutkan sentenced Maria Butina to 18 months in prison for conspiring to be an unregistered agent of the Russian government in the United States.

On November 9, 2021, she denied former U.S. president, Donald Trump’s plea to keep records from being released to the House Select Committee investigating the attack on the Capitol on January 6, 2021.

At this time of writing (Thursday, August 3, 2023), Chutkan is the judge overseeing the criminal trial of Donald J. Trump over the events leading up to the January 6, 2021, United States Capitol attack.

In 1983, Tanya Chutkan received a Bachelor of Arts degree from George Washington University.
