The old guys (Japanese: オヤジたち old guys) are a quintet of non-player characters that appear in Ruby, Sapphire, Emerald, Omega Ruby, and Alpha Sapphire. They differ in the color of their hair and clothing.
They all appear in the Mauville City Pokémon Center, though only one will be present at a time. In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, they also appear in Mauville Hills later.
Mechanics
Generation III
In Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the final digit of the player's Trainer ID number determines which of the five men will initially appear in the Mauville City Pokémon Center. The following list details which number corresponds with which man.
- If the Trainer's ID ends in 0 or 1, the Bard will appear.
- If the Trainer's ID ends in 2 or 3, the Hipster will appear.
- If the Trainer's ID ends in 4 or 5, the Trader will appear.
- If the Trainer's ID ends in 6 or 7, the Storyteller will appear.
- If the Trainer's ID ends in 8 or 9, Giddy will appear.
If two or more players of Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire or Emerald mix records with each other, the men that were in each players' games will be transferred over. The player is allowed one interaction with the man that initially appears in their game, as well as one interaction with each man they receive from another player through record mixing.
Generation VI
In Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, they give the player O-Powers. Giddy is in the Mauville City Pokémon Center when the player first arrives. After being interacted with twice, he leaves.
Other old guys will only appear or give the player their second set of O-Powers after the player has reached specific points in the storyline. If one of the men leaves, the next will not appear until the player has reached the point in the storyline where they can receive the next O-Power; if the player obtains the first O-Power from one old guy but is not yet far enough in the game to obtain the second from him, the current old guy will remain in the Pokémon Center.
After the Storyteller has left the Pokémon Center for their shared apartment in Mauville Hills (Apartment 3), when the player visits all five in their apartment, the Storyteller will mention that they are looking for someone to pass their powers to; the player tells him about the powerless man living across the hall, at which point the Storyteller requests that the player lead the powerless man to them. If the player does so, they will each give him their power (disappearing after doing so), turning the powerless man into Mr. Bonding. Mr. Bonding will give the player the final O-Power, Hatching Power, and leave.

Generation VII
In Pokémon Sun, Moon, Ultra Sun, and Ultra Moon, while they do not appear, the old guys are referenced by a man in Haina Desert, who gave the "star pulses" he received from a SolrockSUS/LunatoneMUM to a "group of wonderful men" 30 years prior to the game's events. SolrockSUS/LunatoneMUM produces the O-Power sound effect when restoring the man's memories.
Giddy
Giddy (Japanese: メルヘンおやじ Fairy-tale old man) will have a "scintillating story" for the player, asking a series of yes or no questions. He appears to have a brother (Gaddy) and a niece who live in Laverre City in the Kalos region.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, Giddy's questions are based on either a word from the easy chat system or something else, such as if the player knows a nice place for vacation.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Giddy will reward the player with the Speed O-Power for answering his questions. He is in the Pokémon Center as soon as the player arrives there. Later, the player may answer more of his questions and receive the Critical Power, at which point he leaves.
The Hipster
The Hipster (Japanese: ナウいおやじ Hip old man) will tell the player a collection of "trendy words".
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, he adds phrases to the game's easy chat system. He will add one phrase each time he is talked to after records are mixed.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he will use a bunch of trendy words and reward the player with one or two O-Powers for listening. He first appears after the player has the Dynamo Badge, and ramble once. For listening to his trendy words the first time he will give the player the Befriending Power. After the player has the Heat Badge, he will tell the player more trendy words, then give the player the Encounter Power and Accuracy Power for listening and leave.
The Bard
The Bard (Japanese: シンガーソングおやじ Singer-songwriter old man) will sing a song to the player.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, the song he sings will be made up of six words or phrases from the easy chat system. He will then tell the player he isn't happy with the lyrics and ask them to change one word or phrase. When the Bard sings, the game will make noises that sound very vaguely like the words or phrases in the song. If the Bard attempts to sing a phrase that is exclusive to Pokémon Emerald in Pokémon Ruby and Sapphire (such as "Tower"), the phrase will appear as "???". If he attempts to sing Celebi's name, no sound will play for that word[1].
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he will sing two lines of his song, then give the player an O-Power as an apology for singing an unfinished song. He first appears after the player has the Balance Badge, and sing once. For listening to his song the first time he will give the player the Prize Money Power. After the player has the Feather Badge, he will sing again, then give the player the Exp. Point Power for listening and leave.
The Trader
The Trader (Japanese: グッズ交換おやじ Goods-trading old man) will trade the player Secret Base Decorations.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, he will trade the player one of his decorations (Duskull Doll, Ball Cushion, Tire, Pretty Flowers) for one of the player's decorations. He will only trade once each time the player mixes records. When he is passed to another player via record mixing, he will replace the item he originally offered with the item the player traded him.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he will offer to trade the player one of four Decorations (Duskull Doll, Ball Cushion, Tire, Flowering Plant) for one of three items (Potion, Antidote, Poké Ball). He first appears after the player has the Mind Badge, and trade once. For trading the first time he will give the player the Stealth Power. After the player has the Rain Badge, he will trade one of the decorations from the same pool again, then give the player the Bargain Power for trading and leave.
The Storyteller
The Storyteller (Japanese: 伝説おやじ Folklore old man), in his own words, tells "tales of legendary Trainers". He will tell the player a selection of statistics about players and make a comment about it.
In Pokémon Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald, he will give a list of up to four stories that he knows and ask the player to pick the one they want to hear. He will tell the player the number of times the player or a player has mixed records with has done the topic of the story. He will also "unlock" another story for each time the player has mixed records.
In Pokémon Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, he will tell the player a fixed list of stats about themself. He first appears after the player has the Rain Badge and traded with the Trader twice, and will tell the player about themselves once. After he realizes he is talking to the legendary Trainer he is describing, he will give the player the PP Restoring Power. After the player has entered the Hall of Fame, he will tell the player that he can now go home having met the legendary Trainer that is the player and leaves.

Originally it meant "trendy", but in contemporary Japanese is understood as "outdated" or "old-fashioned".
